I would consider it more and insurance versus and investment. However, you could do separate tasks with the other two domains. For instance your .com might be your primary site and your .net a membership site.

Fortunately and unfortunately there are sever extensions besides the big three. .name, .info, .us so you can never be completely assured that your visitors do not get "sidetracked"
