I disagree. Now is a good time to evaluate a host. A newbie should be able to discuss service and get some pointers from a good host. Certainly, they won't install scripts the without a fee, but giving some guidance and a little help is not too much to expect. If they won't, what makes you think they'll be any help when there is a problem that the average user couldn't be expected to resolve on their own.

It takes only a minute to respond to a basic query and gives the customer satisfaction.

Free hosts have a place in the business, but unless you're planning to host a very basic personal site, commercial hosting should be considered.
