The issue of closing threads is not an exact science, rather it is a value judgement that has to be made by one of the moderators or forum administrators. Basically, if a thread has a reasonable part of the conversation occuring in the current year or if the thread contains information that others may find valuable, then the thread is left open. Sometimes, mistakes are made.
