I need some information and reviews about the MaxMind's GeoIP product. Its IP to country database updated weekly.

How useful is that? I need to ban some nigerians/iranians alongwith few other countries to access my server...

The MaxMind database is definitely a good way to keep track of this sort of thing. We used it when it was supported with MB.

It is great! Currently there is free MaxMind screening with my merchant account, so I'm not even paying them directly or any extra fees to access their database.

I wanted to add, that about 6 years ago I actually did my ip checking by hand ! So it does help somewhat to automate. But checking manually on suspicious orders is still a must.

what is this database about? Do they have a list of spammer IP's? If so, mabye someone can share a good list? I haven't gotten to many spammers lately myself, after installing some good anti-spam addons.

Manual IP checks are a must in my opinion, no matter how big your site gets.

It doesn't take many extra resources to do so, since most of your activity isn't going to throw any red flags at you.

If so, you might want to rethink the type of content you contain on your site as the target audience is apparently the wrong crowd to have around, anyway.

Free GeoIP is pretty old (maybe more than 6 month´s behing). Payed GeoIP is better, if you need up to date data.

I've used IP2Location's database in the past and found it to be pretty awesome for blocking entire countries. You can buy more specific databases too, but all I needed was country-level.

We have been using them for two years now and it has been great. Would try their phone verification service but it takes too long to get the results of the call.
