WordPress.com outage downs 10.2 million blogs for 2 hours

The giant of blog hosting WordPress.com has seen an outage Thursday this week that lasted for nearly 2 hours. An unscheduled router change took 10.0 million blogs down when all the mechanisms for failover also broke. The company is working on a plan to make sure a similar issue does not occur in the future.

Ubuntu hit by an outage on November 1

Ubuntu has experienced outages on November 1 due to downloads of various software including Xubuntu, Edubuntu, Ubuntu 9.10 serve and desktop editions as well as Karmic Koala. According to a survey, over 1.4 million websites are served from Ubuntu machines.

AT&T brings 4chan.org back after denial-of-service attack

A popular image-based bulletin board 4chan.org was brought back online by AT&T. In the statement released by AT&T, the company said that while most users thought adult content might have been the reason for the shut-down, the web service was in fact down due to a denial-of-service attack.

Amazon.com Sunday outage

Amazon Web Services detected a packet loss from around 12:30 to 12:45pm PDT on Sunday July 19. The outage affected CloudFront, the US Elastic Compute Cloud, Elastic MapReduce, and Mechanical Turk (Worker) services. This event follows a June 11 disruption when a lighting hit a single power distribution unit.

MediaTemple suffers a 2-day long outage

On May 4, a major outage at MediaTemple placed their customers’ websites offline for nearly two days. In a statement issued by the company, only the grid hosting service customers were affected, and not the shared hosting customers. The company suffered a similar outage back in March, which lasted 38 hours.
