I think this would just cause confusion. If you want it so incase your main site goes down so your support system would still be up, whos to say that the server that the support system is hosted on wouldn't go down and the main page would still be up? I think it's best just to leave the two connected.

But that's just my 2 cents.

I think it's personally a great idea to do this.

However, I think it should be used ONLY if your main site is down. I think you should have a standard support center in place, on the same domain, and only direct to the alternative, should something make the standard support unavailable.

I have a separate domain name for our helpdesk. It's so that if for some reason our main site is down, the helpdesk will be available as it is hosted in a different datacenter.

Actually I correct myself, I had a brain fart for a minute I didn't think about it from this point of view, when you update your domain to redirect it is almost instant, correct?

We use <<URLs edited>> different domains for support as well as the forums

I think it's a good idea to have a seprate domain for support, You can add many more features but then again just a sub-domain on your hosting site would look good

I've found a very easy and simple solution.

Keep your main hosting site at a seperate datacenter/server then your customers servers.
