After much talk here and elsewhere about buying domain names on eBay and so on I started to look. But it made me wonder. How could you be sure that the name would get transferred to you? How could you protect yourself against fraud?

Many people recommend Escrow for transactions like this.

Yes it's reliable. It's why the housing market uses escrow Escrow is a 3rd party that holds the money until both parties meet the agreements set forth. Then the fees are released.

It is always the best way to go. Sometimes I have people that come over from other hosts and they end up doing the same thing which I have no issues with, most times I end up recommending it anyway.

Thank you HandsOn, I had wondered what escrow would have to do with something like this, given that I had only ever heard of it in regards to housing sales before. But it makes sense and would seem to be a good service to use to be sure that you didn't get ripped off.

Why do you think that it is risky to use Paypal?

Hello,

How the domain would be transferred to you is an issue but, I do not think its the bigger issue. How do you know what the domain history is? Pardon me, but what if it was posted on pornographic or hacking related websites. Or used to spam private e-mail address or servers? Good luck trying to start a company when you type it in to Google.com shows explicit content. I always wonder about that more then the transfer process. Maybe I'm just paranoid.

For secured domain transfer and payment transaction, people generally use reliable third- party intermediary like escrows service.

You raise a very interesting point there. I wouldn't have any idea how to check this even-though I would imagine that Googling would find if there were any negative reviews floating around of the site. That would be a good place to start.

A good friend of mine was recently selling a domain name, but I am not sure on the parcticulars involved, regarding how the sale and transfer was done etc., but I will make a note to ask him when I have the chance.
