Here's what to look for in a good domain name.

1. A good domain name is relatively short.
2. A good domain name is easy to remember.
3. A good domain name is NOT easily confused with others.
4. A good domain name is hard to misspell.
5. A good domain name relates to your business name or core business.

A common problem is that people usually type in .com all the time on the web and end up on various other sites. This could be troublesome both for the business and the customer.

When you select a domain name, you are always given a list of different extensions to choose from. These extensions can help specify the type of products or services you are offering online, or your geographical location.

Here are some basic definitions of the extensions you can choose from:

.COM - signifies "commercial". It is the most well-known extension and preferred by all commercial enterprises. The acute scarcity of unforgettable .com domain names has led to creation of several other extensions.

.NET - signifies "network". It is generally used by internet service providers, web hosting companies, or other firms related to network or internet services.

.ORG - signifies "organization". It is commonly used by non-commercial web sites. But, at present, many businesses register their matching .org extension to their .com domain names.

.BIZ - signifies "business". It is used for business web sites. There are more chances of you getting this extension because of its low current penetration.

.INFO - signifies "information". It is generally used for information sharing web sites. This too like .biz is gradually growing in popularity and there is more likelihood of you getting it.

Your first aim should be to get a perfect domain name for your website or business. Once you have done that you should then consider registering other extensions for the same domain name as well, and point them to the main domain name.

Yet here I thought that the reason for their creation was strictly commercial - if you bought and developed the .com domain, you'd better buy the .biz etc. as well, or someone else will.

Firstly I would compare keyword relevancy with the short and highly searched keywords related to the product and services which will be provided through that particular website. Then if the website would be going to target only local customers or just aiming to targeting domestic market within a particular country then choosing the domain extension related to that particular country is ok but if the website would be going to target global customers the .com should be the first preference.

I am a big fan of two word domain names where both words start with the same letter. That way, it will roll off the tongue for most people, therefore be easy to remember. Anything that rolls off the tongue or sounds catchy will work.

Many will argue, including myself, that a domain name with SEO keywords in it is less memorable than an original name. How do you respond? Why did you advice that? (I assume that by your point 4 meant easy to remember, not easy to learn.)

I would go for a domain name which is short, easy to say and easy to remember. It is hard to find a one word domain name which is still available, so a two word domain name would be fine.

It is also important to match your domain name to the name of your site so that it will be easily remembered.
