I have read in forums that OsCommerce is difficult to learn and implement. It has alot of features which one will never be using on an average size shopping cart site.

This has encouraged me to understand OsCommerce and its functioning. Before I start experimenting and testing the functions, can anyone let me know what are the areas of concern, potential difficult to understand aspects of osCommerce?

I dont know why people say is so hard. If you have experience coding isnt too much a problem to do anything need to do.
The one I have running on Pioneerz is fully modded with catalog generator and affiliate system and more into it so makes a bit simpler I guess. It has a HTML editor too which the out-of-the-box oscommerce doesnt, you have to know at least basic tags to fancy up your listings.
If need help buzz me or email me and Ill be glad to give you pointers, in the meantime start reading that huge manual, it will help

OsCommerce is not as difficult as most people think. Many control panels, cPanel especially, have it built in already and it almost installs itself. Configuration is done in a few clicks. The only time consuming part that I saw was building your store after the initial installation.

I think this may be essential if you want to implement it and sell things online

Actually, osCommerce comes with a complete design and is ready to be installed and start selling products online right away. That’s certainly a benefit of this Ecommerce solution.

In the same time, default osCommerce design, being very generic and basic, may not suit each and every online store owner, and may not help selling certain product ranges. Also it has not been changed for several years now, and doesn’t look as contemporary as it was in the past.

I would recommend you to look at Magento Commerce, which is one of the best shopping cart in the open source market.

I don't know if I would call it difficult either as much as maybe a bit time consuming but then anything that deals with the level of detail OsCommerce does would be as well. I'm not one to learn very good out of manuals as I tend to remember things better by doing them (and usually messing them up a few times in the process).

Take a bit of time and play with it if you can and see if it is something that will work for you. Make sure the time it will take you to get it to do what you need will translate to time saved and ease of use to your customers.

as a developer i dont like that oscommerce isnt using the mvc software model, and its source code can be hard to follow imo. i have done modifications and felt it was very bloated performance-wise. its been a few years since i last saw it, maybe its improved?

If you are a programmer then it will not be hard, and is a very good for making cheap websites. Is true that is a little annoying to make changes in the oscommerce for the first time but then you get use to it.

Is a very good open source solution for e-commerce.

Of course a lot of things can be improved in it (is not perfect) but the most important things at the oscommerce are the contributions.

"And what company will make you a webshop better than oscommerce at a human price?"
