I still can't belive they are giving 1000mb of space. How can they aford it concidering all the people who will no doubt be signing up for it.

Francisco, you can get an invite from someone that already has a gmail account, I'm not totally sure how you get them, I know you can get more invites if you report bugs.
Someone I know was very kind and gave me one free, normally people charge others about $20-$30 for an invite to get an account.

Getting an acount early means that you can get a good name for your email address before they are all taken.

I just got my own name for my account.

gooooogle, I don't really know what they are doing to give so much space, I doubt many people will use that and I don't have what their limits are like for attachments, they would have to have some sort of limits otherwise people would be using the accounts for uploading warez.
