Just saw a video of this scam. Don't remember how I found it, but wanted your take on it. I don't think I'd give my name or raise my hand for a stranger.

That is pretty amazing. Though I don't know if that would fly around here. I assume the waitress would be fired before they had the other customer pay for the bill.

I don't know... these social tricks can be hard to spot. You never know how you're going to react.

That would actually work 100% of the time when executed perfectly like in this video. Although, if it happended to me, I'm pretty sure I would not pay the bill either, the restaurant will have to take the loss..

I'd have to agree HostLeet - no way I'd pay that bill either. If I tried that scam, they'd probably have me on cameras and post it on the evening news, then everyone in the city would be looking for me. If my wife saw it, she'd turn me in. I could never do that to someone else anyway.

True, I would contend the bill as well. The waiter made the mistake here. You can't just take someone's "He's going to pay!" instructions. You have to get the clearly specified OK from the payer. A simple raising of the hand won't work, this is not an auction.

Oh my God, that is not a new trick at all.

Sure, if I was in a company of people and distracted, I'd raise my hand, but I wouldn't pay for the bill. It is a servers' responsibility to VERIFY information critical as this. However, since watching the movie I linked to above, that scene stuck with me for life, so if someone as much as try that in a restaurant on me, I will walk to the person/waiter myself.

This would only work in certain places, I would think. The geography of the room is conducive to it. Many chain restaurants are too large and maze-like for this to ever be realistic. It would need one of those small pub-like places to be an option. Given how there are only so many such places in any one place, I can't imagine this scam would work for the same person more than a few times.

I definitely would not pay for a stranger's meal. (Nor should the waitress; at least not at the menu price.)
