Hello

Actually, few months ago someone raised a question on our Internal forum. His question is like this “What will happen if I remove the RAM from the live computer or server when it is running”

One of our technical support staff member commented following statement:

Quote:
RAM can surely be removed from the machine if it is Hot-swappable [If your machine supports it, then go for it]. Before removing Hot swappable RAM from the machine, you need to first insert a secondary RAM.
So what you think? And how many web hosts using Hot-swappable RAM on their servers?

Hot swappable RAM has been around for years. I've never seen any provider advertise this feature, so coming up with "how many" would seem a nearly impossible task, Paul.

Never used it. We run hot swap drives, but never did anything on the ram level. Usually, if it gets to a point that memory has to be replaced, the machine is taken out of service and a standby machine is brought in it's place. Pull drives from one system, launch on other - system back online.

Never had a need for hotswap ram before.

Never used it nor seen it, but to be honest, it is probably around but I would not go attempting it.

Imagine the amount of issues it could cause......

I would rather shut it down, slide it on a tray and change it in 5 minutes, much better than a lump of trouble you could have with hot swapables.

HotSwap RAM has always been a bit of a "gimmick", doesnt work with most OS variations, has a tendency to destroy the RAM on removal.

IME anyone stupid enough to stick their hands into a live/working/powered-up server, deserves everything they're going to get
