File transfer with my hosting provider is extremely slow! Does this depends on the hardware and software of the provider or the fact that provider is located physically very far from me? Web site of 3-4 MB (average number of files) needs around 5-6 minutes to be transferred.

Transfer with my other paid hosting services is very fast, but they are located in my country, if maybe that is the reason?

This can be related to any number of issues. Of course, the fact that the slower of your providers is located in another country will increase latency. Do you have the same connectivity plans with each of them? Is this something new, or has it been ongoing? Their server may be overloaded.

Could be your provider, your host, or anyone in between. Run a trace route and see what you've got to deal with..

which ftp software you are using??? once have you checked with some other ISP !! disable the antivrus scan and you can try it..antvirus also blocks the FTP it may slow down..disable the fire wall and test it..if this is not working check some other ISP even slow then use the file manger in the hosting panel and contact the hosting provider.

I'm in Web Design business for years, so I have been transferring files for a living Jokes aside, this has been a constant issue (three years now), but I wouldn't call it an issue because it's not really a problem, I just raised a question to see what could be the cause.

I'm using Dreamweaver, FileZilla and Total Commander for FTP.

ISP is not an issue I'm sure, because this server speed has been the same on two different providers.

I repeat, this is not an issue but I wanted to know what are the possibilities. I'm guessing the main factor is geographical distance? This is now a pickle because I'm pretty satisfied with this host and I don't want to change it, but hosts in my country are so damn fast.

It should be an issue of geographical distance since hosts in your country are fast and those that are not aren't.

The network route result can help you identify if there are any network sluggishness en route, your support can identify the slow bottle neck point, if you can get them the result of a trace route.

Your provider might be placing a cap on your FTP uploads.

The OP is saying that uploading files to his host takes a very long time so we're trying to find out the reason. ^^

Try switching FTP software. I recommend FileZilla. If that doesn't work, contact your ISP or host.

Every time I tried using FileZilla, it would freeze. 7 out of 10 times.
I use FreeFTP.com and I am happy. It is light and has all the basic features I need. Anything above is an overkill for me.

I use Filezilla with not problem, I used to be a CuteFTP fan.

As for the slow transfer, one good possible reason is the location of the server and your ISP.

File transfer depends on the location and also the FTP program.
Filezilla is very fast. Try it !.

Can you find out where your host is located? If you can do that, then find out if there's another host in the same area, you can test that way maybe?
