Hello

I've been advised to install and setup APF firewall.
So I went to the developers site and followed all the instructions.
My server is running CentOS 5 32-bit.

After the installation process was complete, then the configuration process came up. I read, read, and read again. It's all jargon to me.
I have absolutely no idea what to do. I don't fully understand the instructions and I don't want to configure it wrongly.

I googled around and found some tutorials but they were written in like 2004-2006. Some were written in 2010. For that reason I didn't bother following their instructions as they are a bit out of date.

Have any of you ever configured APF firewall?
Would you be able to advise me on how to configure it?

All I've done so far is install it. I haven't attempted to play around with it yet. I hope it's not secretly running with messed up settings.

if you just installed it default it will be in testing mode and it will shut down Evey 5 min & flush the rules after start

not that difficult the /etc/apf/conf.apf file is quite well documented

APF is a great firewall system, and when coupled with BFD it's very much a winning combination.

I personally stopped using APF back in probably 2006 timeframe when CSF came on the market and made life so much easier (especially for cPanel/WHM users).

CSF & LFD by http://www.configservers.com is all interface-able through the WHM system.

That being said, you're configuring a firewall for the system. If you're not sure on everything that it's asking, then you need to ask your system admin as they will know what each of the items are. CSF has a log of documentation (and in software documentation for configuration), but again, this is all about system security.

Yes, thanks for all your help.
Shortly after posting this I found out about ConfigServer.
I promptly uninstalled APF and replaced it with ConfigServer.
I much prefer the idea of a firewall with a UI.

Yes it sure does.
And I've just finished configuring it for the first time.
My security level currently rates at 114/133.
Not bad for the first configuration I don't think.
Considering that default setting only ranks at 78/133.
All in all I'm happy with today's work.
The firewall is now off safe mode and officially running.
