I am not all the bright, knowledgeable or informed about this stuff ... so just bear with me

I am in the process of switching web hosts and there are a number of sites made using MS Frontpage. The backup function provided on the current sites do the backup in ".gz" or ".tar.gz" formats.

If I use the web sites backup function and then upload that onto the new site ... does anyone know if the MS Frontpage sites will still operate correctly? Or do you think the sites will only work right if the "Publish Web" function in Frontpage is the only way to accomplish it?

*.gz or *.tar.gz are compressed files. You'll want to use WinRAR or a similar program to use said files. Microsoft FrontPage will not be able to open those files, you're only hope would be to "restore" said backup.

Your web host should be able to move your site from your current server to the new server by using WHM. A few clicks and he can copy it all over (assuming each server has cPanel installed).

Well actually ... I am moving from a site with WHM & Cpanels (each site has its own Cpanel) ... to a web host that offers the same. I was going to use the CPanel Backup facility on each site ... and then use the Restore feature on the new sites/accounts. I do not think I have a WinRAR option available

I should contact my new host to see if they would be able to do the WHM transfer thing you mention for me. I sure would not attempt it myself ... with my luck I would end up erasing both web spaces hahaha

It's pretty easy to do in WHM. Just tell it the server's IP, the account name/password and click copy. (stay on the page while it copies until it says copy complete) Check and make sure it has the correct IP for the new server (something I've had issues with in the past) and then you're done. Fairly simple and it doesn't delete any files.
