Hi all, quick question, and I'm new at all this, so be patient with me. In the past, when I've used my ISP's web space to host a site, or uploaded my webpage to an external hosting site, I had an ftp account that I could upload my pages to, and then I would go to a different address to view the page. Well now I'm hosting my own site, on a web server I have at home, and my brother would like to be able to ftp updates to the website up. Is there a way I can do that? The only way I know to update the site right now is to have him email me the updated files, and for me to place them in personally. Any help?
Thanks,
Nate

You would have to use an FTP server, just like you use an HTTP server. I would recommend GuildFTP. It's a good piece of software for a novice. There's no confusing configuration files to play with. Everything is in a GUI interface.

I also recommend that you check with your ISP to make sure that running servers on your connection doesn't violate their terms, otherwise, you might find yourself without an ISP.

Thanks, I'll look into that. My ISP doesn't really allow web hosting, but my site is just going to be a small personal site, that will not get much traffic at all. Just for family information and stuff. They won't even notice.
Thanks,
Nate

Just want to let you know that there are many ISP's that perform random port scans to see if anything responds when they connect to a port on your connection. If a server responds, they know that you are running a server. I would be careful.

You should check with your ISP.
I have run a server on my home computer to test certain scripts for vulnerabilities. I checked with my ISP first and while they don't allow web servers in their TOS they said they don't worry about it unless the server is producing a lot of traffic.
