I've just purchased a root server and I've no clue what I'm doing. But I've only 1 IP address. I can order 8 more.

I can apparently have 100 clients.
I don't want any clients, just me but I do want to have five websites, 4 small ones and one major one.

I don't understand how they share the same ip address, and this nameserver thing.

so far I have something called a default domain.. it just says default-domain.co.uk .... I don't know what that is, or what I'm supposed to do with it.

I bought a domain from godaddy for example. bevsite.com it's currently parked there free.

In Plesk 8.0
I added the domain bevsite.com
and I clicked on DNS and it says ns.bevsite.com

I went to godaddy to the nameserver part but its asking me for 2 nameservers, hmm, so I went back to plesk and tried to add another ns, but I'm not sure what I'm doing because I've only got 1 ip address

Record type I selected NS
Enter domain name (there is a blank box and out side the box says .bevsite.com )

Enter nameserver ?

So, I left the middle blank box blank,
and entered ns2 in the nameserver

so, I have ns.bevsite.com and ns2.bevsite.com
So I tried to enter them into godaddy and received this message
Field Validation Error

Please correct the following issue(s):

Unavailable error in field Host name1
Unavailable error in field Host name2

The unavailable error could be received if the nameserver entered is not registered at the registry.

So I've done something wrong Can anyone give me an idiot guide, my root serverhost has a poor help system

Bev

To give you the "idiots" guide would take a fair while...

I'll be more than happy to help you out via MSN/AIM/IRC.

Whilst you're at it, what operating system are you using? Your nameservers need to be running on two seperate IPs. BIND can be setup to run off two Ips on the same machine. If you get your host to give you 2 more IPs and set the PTR on them to ns1.yourdomain & ns2.yourdomain, you should be in business.

Lemme know if I can try and help you out...

Well i guess i can give you some pointers without calling you an idiot.

- First go into basic whm setup >
Then go to primary nameserver
Then use a domain you already own and put this term behind it "ns1" and "ns2" for example:
ns1.domain.com < Primary Nameserver
ns2.domain.com < Secondary Nameserver

Then click the button that says "assign ip" and note that ip down!
Then go to your registrar where your domain is registered and look for FAQS on how to make custom nameservers using the ips you have.

And about hosting multiplke websites:

You can host as many websites as you want on 1 ip, its called being on a shared ip.

That should do it i think

Name servers can be fairly complicated and it sounds like you are starting at square one.

Since you only have 5 sites, you might want to let someone else manage your dns stuff. Then you only need one ip for all your sites. Your hosting company likely offers dns services free with your server.

Rather than trying to run 2 named daemons on your hosting server you would be better off letting someone else add the dns records to their dedicated name servers.

It is nice to be able to mange dns records. But with 1 ip, you wont need to make too many changes.

most registars require 2 nameservers so if you only have one Ip you have 3 options basically:
  • Get another IP from provider so can set up 2
  • Use a DNS service, there are free ones
  • Get someone to provide the secondary for you
