Avatars?

What about Avatars, Art? Even if it's something that is in the Rewards Store that has to be purchased. 100, 200 points. I think it'd be a neat thing to have. Even if it is only displayed once per thread. Avatars.

John, if you can prove to us the direct benefit of having avatars enabled, we will seriously consider having them. As per my own opinion, avatars are distracting, especially when we are trying to build a community based on content, not necessarily looks.

Best,

There really is no "direct" benefit to having an avatar. It is just neat to be able to add that little bit of personalization.

It's like a company offering free soda. There is no benefit, if anything it is harmful and the company would be better off sticking to the drinking fountains. But some companies do it as a reward to their staff. I just think of avatars as that extra little reward to forum members I guess.

Over at DevShed you have to be a member for X long with X amount of posts before getting an avatar. It's I guess neat to be able to say, "I've been a worthwhile member and can display my achievement proudly".

So, like I said, I can't prove that it is beneficial - except as being a milestone.

I would agree with Exon on this one Art.
I'm not a big fan of avatars but they do allow an expression of individuality.
I think it would be a good incentive based thing for people to post. You could keep the size small to minimize server load.

I guess I can see how it can be beneficial. I will put this down on the to-do list, and we'll see if there is a hack that can allow us to control avatars (similar to DevShed).

Btw, I am not worried about server load, I am worried about distracting on them, instead of focusing on what takes place in a thread.

I don't feel that avatars take away from a thread. Images in signatures take away from that, but the avatars off to the left are, in my opinion, no different than the image tags under the names. The trophy's and the HD logos/staff assignments aren't that distracting are they? They don't pull my attention from the thread.

Should just be some usergroup reworking in the vB admin cp. I'd create a promotion where the original group can't use avatars. Then, promote that group to a group that can use avatars after posting so many times and being a member for so many days.

Now there's a problem when you're talking about current members...

Perhaps you could just allow static avatars. No animation. Then it won't be a distraction.

I am actually looking into this right now, alongside working with Mark on integrating IntelloDesk at HD.
I can't make guarantees that I will suceed, so if that doesn't work for me, it will definitely work for Jose when he goes online. :)

EDIT: We can perhaps allow members with at least 200 posts to use Avatars for now without any membership time length limitations?

I think of avatars as static images. You could ban animated images couldn't you?

Who's Jose?

I think requirements should be a little less. Say 50 posts and a member for at least one month.

Eh. I don't think vB distinguishes between the two.

Who's Jose?
Orioli on the forums. :mic:

Jose = Orioli. :)

There is an option that allows people to upload pictures in their user profiles.
Will this be something of interest or do you guys want avatars? :D

I think I know how to allow avatars, but based only on # of posts.
I can also set a promotion to allow both I think, but why did you say there could be a problem with current members? It seems like we can establish a promotion to be applicable to all active users. :)

The 50 posts, and member for one month is good, just be sure the filter doesn't allow one OR the other. I just think it'd be neat as a "milestone" for members.

Oh, and if we can only pick one or the other, I'd have to pick avatars over profile pictures.

I think that members that already have met the requirements will not be promoted into the necessary usergroup.
Yeah, that is what I faced just now. Maybe there is a hack that would allow to manage avatar permissions and go around the problem of current/new members with more ease.
Alright, I am leaving this one to Jose... :help:

I think for now 200 posts for avatars is a good deal and maybe more in the future as these forums are continually getting busier and busier by the looks of it :D.

I'd say more than 50, but not necessarily 200. That's quite a bit. I like the longevity+posts idea though.
