With regards to Facebook not working - it could have been your target demographic or even how the advertisement is laid out.
Even on google adwords, you need to do A/B testing, B/C testing and A/C testing. You should have multiple advertisements pitting against each other and variations for days, times and demograpics. Never should you have an advertisement in only one form. Different layouts and wording will produce different results.
