What methods do you use to promote your web hosting company?

Check out the marketing and promotion thread. In short: banners, social networks, forums, print publications, blog posts, PR and article submissions.

Include direct mail and email broadcasting. Also, networking in your local community.

Oh, also, sponsoring events can be good, considering the type of event and whether or not it's related to your business. For example, we sponsored part of HostingCon this year, though we don't normally sponsor events. It went pretty well.

Use your employees, we have recently been “loaning out” our supportdeveloper staff to help with community projects or integration tasks, helps to keep them busy and for the developers gives them a chance to veiw other projects and try new techinques inbetween support when things slow, also more often than not produces good back links and or recommendations. In essence, play to your strengths.

Web hosting companies, especially if they are newly created need a push actually for commencing the competition. Some spending could be nice by using the PPC solutions wisely and affordable. The printing manuals are also great for the local communities and cities. Contacting the SEO experts may also be highly recommended since the search engines would be the primary sales potential places and traffic spots.

When it comes to promotion online, then there are several ways like advertising through adwords etc. or buying ad spaces in famous blogs, websites related to the web.

But better than that, offline promotion works like a charm. You can post newsletters, advertise in magazines, advertise in newspapers etc. and get local clients which you can hold for long if you have the capability to handle them.

I find the real trick is balancing result and cost, which isn't always easy to figure out with offline media. That's the downside. It works, it's just hard to track and it takes time.

I think that the above covers most of the common promotional methods for promoting your new hosting company, however here are a few others worth mentioning:

1. Twitter - Twitter is a fast pace network with literally millions of people online at any given time, once you have a twitter account use the search service on the right and type in the term “host” or “hosting” I have found doing this and scrolling down the results, shows at least 1 person asking for a host. Obviously then you should send them a direct message via Twitters internal messaging system. Repeating this process several times a day will soon increase your hosting client base.

2. Hosting Reviews - Do a search on your favourite search engine for the terms “hosting reviews” then find a site that allows you to add your hosting services, be aware however that most hosting reviews websites are not in fact review sites at all, they are simply promoting a few hosts on their main page for commissions. Whatever you do DON’T join these sites, they are just going to stuff your details well back in the listings. I could mention a few good ones here, but I have just joined the forum so I guess I would be looking at a ban for posting links. Try searching MSN rather than Google.

3. Is Hosting Your Main Offering? If hosting is to be your main offering and not the usual strap on services like web design and SEO, then try teaming up with local designers and SEO persons to offer each others services. This is a great partnership if the designer/seo is good but can obviously have a negative effect if they are poor quality, so do a little research first.
