Does this help or hinder your business? How about Yahoo or Microsoft's Bing?

We've used them all for advertising and unfortunately it's pretty hard not to spend a large amount for it to be effective.
The larger companies in the hosting industry have the bids so high that the minimum bid for most keywords are $2.50 on up.
Considering you may only have 5% or less of the visitors that click your ads buy your services, it may not be worth the cost.

With Google AdWords, it really helps to use extended keyword phrases - especially those that target your intended geographic audience.

It helps. Google adwords will really increase your site traffic if you can afford it.

I use google a lot myself, but as stated, you have to spend quite a bit of money for the return. A $1500/month budget can yield a good return (if your packages are right). Many of our phrases are in the $5.00 range for specific niches, and we see a decent click through leading to purchase with that. But again, your ad must be specific, and you must have what the person needs. Just targeting "hosting" isn't specific enough. 3 word keyphrases and more get lower rates, and higher clicks.

Yes, Facebook is good, but mainly used for impulse buys. People often glance to the right of the page and see the various advertising, but it's a tough conversion rate as the people are not normally SEARCHING for whatever you're putting in front of them.
The advantage with google, bing, yahoo etc, is that the person is actively looking for a solution. Much like banner ads on a site, people glance past them as they're not actively looking for "XYZ" - but hopefully they've seen your advertisement enough times that they remember your name and type you into google.

Facebook advertising isn't great, unless your targeting towards a generalized population. eg Pizzahut could make great benefits using coupons listed on a Facebook website.
Google lets you target keywords, users and countries etc.

With Facebook you *CAN* target keywords also. It's actually a more concentrated keyword targeting, and combined with the other aspects of location, connection type, age, education, birthdays, sex, and language, it's a better drill down for niche marketing than Google could ever hope for as all this information is provided by the Facebook user.
If you can narrow down your target market to a particular niche field, you can do wonders with Facebook Marketing.

I am using google now and getting 50 hits or so a day, and the results have not been poor, but I am not targeting the high dollar search phrases. I would be curious to see if the results are better with the expensive search phrases.

Getting hits is one thing, getting conversions is another. Of those 50 hits, how many are you converting into a sale? Is it worth the money you're spending on advertising?
