I have never done email marketing since I don't have huge email lists of users. But I see the point and the logic behind it. As with all other things you gotta make an effort if you want results.

Email marketing is still useful but the real challenge is sending out the letters to the people who are interested in following the points. For example, if you are promoting your hosting website via dispatching paid emails to thousands of people, how many of them are actually among the potential buyers of your products? This is the real challenge in here.

I believe we used to do Email marketing and it worked out fairly well in the beginning.

I've been doing email marketing here since late 2009 and it does work. I believe you do need to be consistent in your delivery and message though.

Email Marketing is probably one of the effective way to attract new customers by keeping touch with existing ones and minimizing operating cost.. This is the fastest media to generate new business avenues & push the sale.
Must for Email Marketing:
1. 98% deliverable
2. Design content should be: that it doesn’t get caught in spam folders
3. Comply with Federal law of can spam act of 2003
Today there are many regulations that form various boundaries on this form of marketing.I too firmly believe that this is must for any industry.
