Subdomains and search engines

In the eyes of the search engines, from an seo point of view, are subdomains treated as a separate domain from the tld?

Subdomains are treated as Subdomains, not seperate domains. But Subdomain niche could be different from Domain.
Example: A website mailshayari.com deals on hindi shayari whereas forums.mailshayari.com is forums and not related to shayari in any way.

Making subdomains builds the domain stronger in google

It can't be treated as separate website even you can optimize it for good page rank and quality traffic. Having sub domains are beneficial for your business.

The best way to use sub-domain is to connect it to the main website, because it makes no sense if you include a sub domain to sell computer related products when your main website is selling cosmetics.

Sub domain is a great tool to bring more traffic to your main website by obtaining advantages of primary domain.

Therefore, when sub domain used in the right way, it can be just as effective as multiple domains.

I received an email from Google Alert so they can ban my website because one of our websites had malware.

Yes, because on my part, i have subdomains who ranks first than my homepage/website. I also have keywords rank that are only be seen in other subpages and subdomains. i think they treated it different.

What about site or blog hosting providers like Blogger and Wordpress? I think Blogger has thousands (or millions) of sub-domains whose niches are not related to the main site's niche.

Sub domains are not treated separate domain from tld but they are very helpful in generating traffic to your site.Sub domains helps in increasing rankings for the site as they can obtain the benefit of primary domain.Sub domain niche must be different from the main domain but it can't be treated as a separate site.
