Google makes over 400 changes to their algorithms each year, and this year is no different. If youíre performing SEO for your own site or as a professional service for your clients, itís essential that you keep up with these changes.

Fortunately, Google routinely publishes a list of these changes on itís Official Search Blog, but it seems as though no one knows that this blog exists. Iím always seeing threads on web hosting forums where members ask about Googleís Panda updates, and the variety of replies astounds me.

That is excellent! I also never knew this blog existed. Sometimes keeping track with SEO industry is so hard that you wish you never entered it in the first place.

Yep, always a good site. And like you, I've seen some strange responses from people. It still pisses me off to see information regarding SEO Best Practices that were common place 4 or 5 years ago, and people still recommend it today. A quick look on a Google blog, or even listening to anything Matt Cutts says, and the old practices of stuffing keywords, buying links and using Linkvana or BuildMyRank and you'll see instantly that these are no longer viable SEO Tactics.

I had a client contact me today about their website and wanting some minor tweaks. Instead of an index.html file for their main page, it redirects to the following (words have been changed to protected the stupid);
http://www.domain.com/computer_parts...rts_setup.html

This was probably the most blatant keyword stuffing that I've ever seen a client do. And they can't figure out why their business has dropped rankings and the phone is no longer ringing! Thankfully they had the mind to seek help, but had they not tried this "trick" last year, their business could be a long way further than what it is.

Another site I spend a lot of time on is seo.alltop.com - daily links from industry sources.

Thanks for the link, Conor - it's been bookmarked.

And you're right - that was some extreme keyword stuffing for the URL of their main page. I'm guessing they do something with computer parts?

I should tell you guys I'm done with Google and SEO. We will be doing direct sales, advertising and non-SEO web marketing only from now on. I does not worth the time and the money one would spend on offsite optimization.

SEO is not dead, very far from it. Things have changed, but things always change. Personally, we've loved the new changes implemented by Google - we get higher rankings for our clients as we were doing it the "accepted way" all along - so now it's just a matter of dumping out the results from those that still try to capitalize on the old methods.

I hear every day from SEO companies - "the sky is falling" - it's not! If anything, they skys are clearing up!

Google is looking for organic growth without spikes that raise red flags. If you try to beat the system (Google, that is), it will fight back.

It is only dead if you give up too easy and too quick. Yes its hard work but shouldn't it be? I mean really I do not want to see top search results for anything online when its not actually worth it, if you take the cheap cheat route that is the reputation you will build for your company.
