I'm beginning to see more and more QR codes pop up on TV, in magazines and today even saw one of HD's members is using a QR code for their avatar.

I'm curious how many out there are using QR codes, and if so, how?

Same. It's definitely something I will look into implementing in the future to use for special promos and discounts.

I don't want to say that the QR Codes were a fad, but they're just not used a ton these days. I've seen them used on resturant menus, and heck I even had a set of busienss cards made with my information inside the QR code so it could be imported to a phone.

Probably the biggest downfall with the QR Code system is that there's multiple types, and in order to read it, you have to download an app. And if you want the contact data imported to your phone, you need to download a paid app (or the import works like crap).

That being said, they're great for things like a Bus Stop where a user can click the QR Code and instantly find out the bus route (links directly to a site/page), but the true power of the QR Code really hasn't ever been unleashed. If it's a coupon or a link to a special place, you're losing many of your audience that doesn't have a QR Reader installed, so you pretty much have to have the QR Code & a regular link or contact info below.

At least that's been my experience with it. As for QR Codes in Comercials, I hate them. It's a 30 second comercial, and it takes me 10 seconds to find my phone, a few more to load the app to read the qr code, and then by the time I'm focused on the screen and lining up the box correctly, the commercial is over. Seems like the wrong medium for QR Codes.

With the huge number of smartphone users it could be useful to promote some mobile websites

My Ski Blog business cards have QR codes on them, they can be used for a lot of things now. And the QR codes stick out like a sore thumb. I passed out a few hundred during a convention and saw a huge spike in hits over the next few days.

I have not done that for my web hosting company yet, but there is a curiosity factor involved. I even saw one company stick a QR code on a billboard, though I thought it was a bit dangerous since it was on I70 in Denver and people driving will try to take a pic of it.

Just an update to QR codes - I've started seeing these everywhere. At Walgreens, they're on most products linking to a products info page. At Walmart, they were on the last batch of flowers I bought. I could go on and on, but I don't see a short term fad here. As more and more people purchase and learn how to use their smart phones, vendors are finding ways to promote their products via QR codes to them.

The underlying problem with QR codes is that it takes too long to get the phone out, unlock it, open a QR app, scan it, then hopefully find what your looking for.

It would be nice if you could enable a option in your camera to just recognize a QR. Then just double tap a button and scan.

It seems to me that you would still have to take your phone out and unlock it. I can do all those things in less time than it took me to type this.

Just thought about this and my prev comment

Perhaps the new Google Glasses will be the ultimate use case for QR!

Wearable technology is when it will boom.

We have used QR Codes and some sites but still not all of them by the end of 2012 all our websites will be ready with QR codes.
