Has anyone performed any split testing to determine which of these two performs better in Google's organic search results, given identical content, meta information, site maps, internal and external linking and so on? On the surface, I'm seeing WordPress sites rank consistently better, even when their design looks awful.

As of my experience WordPress works better for search engine ranking and website optimization. I haven't used Joomla though, but WordPress is the award winning CMS platform.

I would think if the content, site maps, meta info and all is exactly the same, then the only factor would be the speed of the site loading. Does Google ranking take that into consideration?

Indeed it does. This is the main I cannot safely say that WordPress is a sure winner here. Normally it would be, given that its generally easier to set most of the things that search engines love. But provided that both sites have exactly the same SEO structure built, it will come down to other factors like speed and then it will come down to pure website development and optimization.

I haven't seen any hard data on Joomla vs Wordpress in regards to rank.

Should you find it, the one thing I'd warn about is false attribution of page rank to CMS. Correlation/causation.

In other words, it could simply be that more talented or experienced SEO experts prefer one over the other.

IMO

Joomla - larger learning curve than WP
WP - easier to use, easier to manage

Joomla, hands down, optimizes and indexes better.

They both have their pros and cons. But from what I have seen Joomla scales better for larger sites. It also indexes better.

I prefer using WP however.

There are differences in the back end coding between the two. I'm curious, Mia, how you've determined that Joomla optimizes and indexes better. I'm seeing just the opposite in Google's organic search results for sites in similar industries.

We're using both platforms for a number of non-profits. I think the categorical hierarchy in the Joomla sites is responsible for this. Other key elements like time stamps, date stamps and multiple authors appear to differentiate what might appear like duplicate content in WP, does not in Joomla.

Of course the content and subject matter on the Joomla sites could also be more popular than those used on the WP counterparts...

There is an article at seoroundtable.com that says it does and also might label a slow website as such.

Also, I don't have any experience with Joomla, but Wordpress works fast for me.

Both are great but depends on how they are managed and how much technical knowledge you have about these platforms. Plugins are something that create problems most of the time so it is better to check with the reviews about using them and then install.

WordPress is better for blogging but I wouldn't recommend it for ecommerce as it is not secured if you dont maintain the plugins and database properly.

I have always preferred WP but never really thought about giving joomla a try. WP has a huge advantage over Joomla in terms of SEO and that is what matters to me but it will be interesting to see how one builds a community site using WP.

SEO 100% WP, with plugins and the right theme it can really work for ecommerce (woocommerce) I only remember joomla from our webhosting era back in the days and have bad experience with clients using bad plugins and getting hacked all the time.. I think this has changed but it still has a bad vibe to it for me.

Definitely, WordPress has an edge over Joomla. WordPress is mostly used CMS till date. You will find many plugins to optimize your website as per the standards laid down by search engines.

I dropped Joomla for wordpress. Loved Joomla themes, but realized it was poor in SEO.

By only just installing your wordpress them, no mater if it is on a new domain name or a recycled domain, web bots and search engines quickly locate it.

I always use wordpress to quickly draw the attention of search engines, before I start making any meaningful developments on my domains.
