I was one of those people who was excited about Google Plus. The way it was built, its features and even the original interface was something that I enjoyed.
I wasted no time in trying to recruit my friends to switch over to Google as well (the effort that didn't go anywhere). It seemed like every time I would visit the resource, unlike Facebook, I would learn something new (given that I could follow interesting people who turned to Google Plus as their blogging platform of choice). So yes, I opened pages for my business as well.
While the resource has lost its charm through about a million and a half changes to UI and decreased interest, I still find amazing that some regular folks (entrepreneurs and some journalists) still manage to attract followers by hundreds of thousands.
As jkateega mentioned above, Google Plus is still there. Maintain your page for free or minimal cost, but don't go overboard. As long as it exits, it will continue to serve as an advantage to SERP. My
