It depends on so many factors... It's good to consider though that in a well managed shared (reseller) hosting environment, performance can be better than on a small dedicated server that doesn't take advantage of the latest technologies.

I've seen dedicated servers starting at some $30...

I have never really seen a good server in the $30 range. A good unmanaged server you should look to spend maybe $130-$220. If you want managed kick the price up maybe $70 on base and max and you will have your price range.

He is correct in mentioning dedi for $30. I have seen them too, obviously its a basic server with no cPanel, 256RAM, 20Gb space and appropriate bandwidth....don't remember exact config. but they were small servers.

Honestly if you wish to use dedi for hosting purpose, consider Dual Xeon servers which shall start anywhere around $200

Red ones are availablefor $10, Purple ones are $2000 :p

It all depends on a huge number of factors:
* is it a server or a desktop
* where is it located
* wahat is it conected to
* whats inside the box
* what support you need
* what software it runs
* whether the compnay will still be in buiness 6 months down the line

That and a million other criteria will determine the price.

I didn't think you meant the server would be good, just figured it should be pointed out.

jimcpweb,

There are a lot of variables as mentioned earlier by othellotech that would determine your dedicated server costs.

Are you able to shed some light as to what server your looking for and the intended use for the server?

Also, if you are aware of the levels of support services you may require this will help deterine if you should go with a self or managed provider (pricing does vary based on this feature).

Regards,
Scott T.

It differs on what configuration you are looking for. The rates differ from configuration to configuration.

So many factors involved.

1. Bandwidth you want.
2. Disk space you want.
3. RAM very point, but very costly.
4. Fantastico/cPanel/WHM addition, most hosts charge more.

^ very vague details, basically it all depends on your configuration and what your looking for.

Also, go for the set-up fees since it lowers your monthly bill.

It's basically a matter of needs: the more you need the more it's gonna cost. So jimcpweb: what exactly do you need?
