For you colo gurus out there! What remote reboot switches do you currently utilize? What makes one better than the next? I am looking to invest in one and was told to look at the APC 2000! I want more information before I make my decision!

Anything from APC is a good choice. Check the website http://www.apcc.com/products/category.cfm?id=13 I've had first hand experience with a couple of their products and can say I've never run into any issues at all.

This is coming from a server provider perspective. We've had great success with the Cyclades Power Management units. http://www.cyclades.com/.

Our APC box has works flawlessly for us. My only gripe is that it doesn't support SSL/SSH, however I believe that the newer models do.

Honestly, unless you go into real high end stuff (with, for example, LDAP authentication and power usage accounting), I don't think there's much distinction between the remote switches out there. They basically all serve the same purpose.

While we're on remote management, you may want to consider a console redirection scheme. We just implemented this and are quite happy with it. Our Supermicro boxes have the ability to push their bios video out the serial port, and the linux kernel can do the same. This way we can do a lot of remote administration that normally would require physical access.

This is a great thing to have when you don't have physical access to the machines. Most people think console is only useful for *nix boxes but the Supermicros that can push the bios video out the serial as mentioned could be an awesome trend.

Though a bit more expensive a kvm over ip solution is amazing! Combined with remote reboot you are set to handle just about anything remotely.
