When you do an 'uptime' on a box, you get the load averages.. such as the following:

Uptime for ircd.thehostbusters.com (FreeBSD): is 6:11PM up 101 days, 23:09, 3 users, load averages: 0.34, 0.43, 0.57

I believe the three averages mean: current, five minutes ago and ten minutes.. not 100% sure..

But, what does that exactly mean? Is 0.34 = 0.34% or what does it mean?
What percent would that equal on the load?

Gordy,

Hey, long time... Anyhow, the 0.34 means .34/1 of a CPU clock cycle. So if the load is under 1 everything is good. The CPU does not have to work as hard to keep up. However, loads up to 4 is still ok in my book. When the server is at 4 depending on your hardware the end user will probally not notice any performance issues. Over 10 and you got major problems.

Thanks, I am actually a old member who has just been too bussy. Ok John. I finally got some free time. O, wait what's that. Ugg I have to write a small update for a customer tomorrow.

I love the new layout and to be honest, I am so sick of WHT so I will be here a lot now:-)

Gordy,

Not really sure if it would be 34% of the CPU if the load was .34

It just means .34 of 1 CPU clock cycle
