Just wondering what you all thought of the VPS/VSD (we're going to call it VPS in this post) hosting market. I have been hacking some VPS technology for nearly a year now and have finally produced a stable, reliable system.

I decided to build on VPS technology due to seeing other VPS hosts crumble from contstant downtimes, slowness and overall usability. The whole idea of fitting 20-30 small dedicated servers on ONE (higher scaled CPU) colocated server is ingenious!

I have worked as an Administrator for OnSmart Networks (http://onsmart.net), and found recurring problems and have fixed most common issues that are related to any VPS service.

So, is there a market for VPS hosts? I have a theory that eventually all hosting is going to be either dedicated or VPS. But there i go thinkin again

Youre probably right about your assessment of the hosting industry.

Most will either be on VPS or dedicated, its just a natural transgression (though I think its awhile off).

Though the concept of virtual servers isnt new. Server consolidation has been in a project in every major IT department for the last couple of years. The most popular software for consolidation has been VM Ware. You can literally run 1 8 way intel server with upto 24 virtual servers, all running different OS's (if you wanted). VM Ware also gives you the ability to reboot each virtual server, without disrupting the rest of the VPS's. Preety remarkable stuff, but very expensive.

Lower end VPS "tools" (as you pointed out), traditionally have stability problems. The only product that has really solved this, at least to a reasonable level, is Hsphere.

the current hsphere panel allows you to set up stable VPS's - so far our customers have been very impressed. There were some issues initially, but once we worked through those, its been smooth sailing.

However, I would be very interested in taking a look at what you guys have come up with. If youve improved on what hsphere has, I def wat to give it serious consideration...

UML is fairly cool . Although it only works for linux based operating sytems and requires a significant amount of fidilin depending on OS.

Well we can run a business totally off User-Mode-Linux with no major stability issues. Admitally it took a bit of time to get things up and running but got there in the end

I think the VPS market will take over the reseller market in the future, maybe when the prices come down a bit.

I think VPS technology is a great thing for the hosting market as its a good way to allow users to have root access to a server without putting others at risk, and its a lot cheaper than a full dedicated server.

I think it will become a lot more popular, but I think the fact that reseller accounts are so inexpensive will take people away from going with a VPS which can cost a good bit more than a reseller plan

Agreed.. VPS are deffinatly the way to go and I would like to see them take over the majority of reseller accounts.

UML is what i've been developing on my servers for some time now. I run dual 1.4ghz 2GB ram, 3 30G scsi RAID4.

I have succesfully build redhat (7.3 and 9.0), slackware, debian and gentoo stable, secure filesystems. I have even coded administrative programs to help VPS administration.

All the VPS's that i have developed are rebootable, and each come with root access. I'm currently working on a proprietary web-based control panel.

Anyways, enough garble. Hopefully this succeeds. Unfortunatly it seems that UML was completely covered in this months Linux enthusiasts' magazine. So it's starting to grow...

Any other opinions would be greatly appreciated.
