I need a linux web hosting plan that allows me to install Asterix server software and I also need MySQL. After talking with a hosting company, they told me I will need individual server plan or a virtual dedicated server will work. Since I am just starting, I believe a basic hosting plan should be OK for me. I looked at godaddy hosting plan and it looks excellent for $26/month virtual dedicated server plan. Do you all experts think this is a good decision?

Isnt' Asterix a telephony program? If it is, you'd need to run it via SIP versus standard telephone hardlines. I would tend to avoid the larger hosts for very specialized software installs, as they tend to be very rigid with both support and any special requirements for the physical server.

I would not reccomend Godaddy as VPS provider. They are domain name registrar first of all. If you want decent provider use the one which have specialization it that. I would recommend you HostV.net Vps packages. They working only with VPS and you can expext for good service.

For something specialized like Asterisk, I'd definitely recommend talking to your prospective host before signing up to make sure that things will work with their system. As the previous poster said, GoDaddy doesn't specialize in VPSs - I'd suggest looking at someone who does that might have done something similar in the past.

Some recommendations that we've had good luck with are Linode, VPSLink, VPSLand and ServerAxis.

If you are happy with godaddy as domain name registraк you can sign up for them as for VPS provider. I think they would be so solid as with domain name registration.

It's two different services and it remains to be seen how they'll do with this new offering.
Support, control panels, features and etc. create a higher demand for manual intervention from the host. Domain name registration is mostly hands-off as it well automated. Web hosting is another matter entirely.

Could some one who has used GoDaddy comment on their service?

I've used GoDaddy's basic web hosting services and they've done just fine. I haven't used their VPS services, though, and I haven't really heard many reviews about that side of thing either, whether positive or negative. Because you have specific needs, though, I think you need to talk directly to someone from there, just to make sure you can get what you need up front.

I use godaddy for domain registration only now. I had a virtual dedicated with them for about a week, it was horrible! I ended up cancelling and demanding a refund (which never came, big surprise). The support is absolutely childish and takes DAYS to respond to even the smallest issue.

They are great for their domain and SSL products (way better than namecheap!), but after the horrible virtual dedicated experience I had with them last month theres no way I would recommend anyone to use them.

Why do you say they're great for domain and SSL products? Is it price? Or support? ???

Godaddy's core business is not supplying VPS.

I dont know anything about Asterix, so leaving that.
Godaddy is okay as a selef managed server. if you know what you are doing, godaddy is fine. They are cheap, relaible.

but dont expect them to help you with server configuration, administration etc. That is self managed server for you

Godaddy is big, so you're not the only one. They won't be too flexible.
as said above, their core buisiness is domains... no vps.

With the big boys, you expect poor support and services. Because your waiting time is 2 hours and they will also blame for your mistakes and charge you.

Why use Godaddy for VPS? They are great domainers without a doubt, but leave VPS deals to someone like Asmallorange.com, VPSLink.com or GlobalTap.com.
