Newbie needs a quick tutorial on RAM requirement for VPS

While selecting a VPS server, how do I determine what is the minimum RAM I will need. Say I start with 256MB dedicated. How will I understand I will more RAM later when my applications are running. Will the server response be slow? In that case many factors will influence the server speed!

Make sure you consider the control panel you plan to use when deciding on the amount of RAM. For example, cPanel tends to use more than Direct Admin. 256Mb is probably the low limit for most panels, but if you're hosting quite a few sites that run on MySQL and using cPanel you'll probably need more.

I've read (and I think it's in its specifications) that DirectAdmin can run well on 128MB, which makes it a great choice for VPS, as it reduces the overhead.

No matter what, you should get 512mb. That's about average. Control Panel consumes your first 256mb so what else left for you to do? right.

Increase the RAM you have now. But it would be cost you additional fees.

ldcdc -correct here. I'd recommend you try to find custom made control panel, which would brу from one hand easy to use and satisfy all your needs and on other hand do not use so much recources on your server.
I believe they would be not so popular as Cpanel, but I have seen some stable

If you choose an OpenVZ/Virtuozzo based VPS, an easy way to determine what resources are lacking is to look at the file /proc/user_beancounter's 'failcnt' field. If you are using a Xen based VPS, look at the swap usage.

I would recommend starting out with a gig of ram so you dont have to worry about it in the future. This way you can focus on more important issues.

Definately get more than 384MB with cpanel. Windows vps require more than normal and i would not go below 384mb on those either.

Bare minimum i would go with on os (linux) alone would be 256mb.

Also depends on what OS is running in the VPS, for windows. 1GB is the recommended minimum for good performance.

I think that by combining the OS and less resource-consuming control panel you'll be able to reach a better performance for your site, you can look into ***********.com deals, they offer a variety of OS.
