Something I'm curious about.

I know very little about Unix/Linux,etc. If I were to get one of those $120 servers from RackShack, since they don't provide managed service, I'd need someone to manage it for me.

What's a reasonable amount to pay someone to manage a server? Is it per hour? Per month? How much work is actually required? Where would you find a professional to do this?

Thanks!

Server management by a good reliable company runs about $150, there are some that are $100, but they tend to always gouge you when an emergency happens by charging you $60 an hour.

It will be hard on your pocket if you're thinking on depending on someone to managed for you for the long run.

For a start, you might like to get from those host who provides server with managed service instead although usually the support is limited.

Alternatively, try starting with some user friendly WHM/Cpanel, etc. and pick up SSH if you're serious about it.

good luck !

Yeah I've sort of looked at a couple of companies that provide "managed" servers but while researching I came across this whole debate regarding what's managed and what's not and how some companies claim managed services but they really aren't. That put me off a little bit, I don't want to get in on somethinig like that and if the server has a problem then find out I'll need to shell out $60/hr to fix it or something...

Hello,
believe those people people from India do it at $100/month. Not really sure though as you may want to double check on this.
Thank you

Well I'm going to continue doing some research in various places on the web and on WHT. I think most managed solutions go for $250 and up. I don't have that kind of cash right away, but who knows if my site takes off then it'd be worth it...

Hello EvilHaider,
Why not go with a managed server? Many Dedicated server companies offer managed servers. You might want to do some search on that too
Thank you

That's exactly what I meant in my last post. Get a managed server from a company that does this.

You should probably look for a "FULL MANAGED" server. not just patches and monitoring. Basically the company should treat your server like 1 of their own.
