hi TJ, - hey haven't talked to you in a long time -- good to see your alive.

Our customers that have a 100Mbit unmettered bandwidth are all custom, large volume - growing customers -
is there a demand -- YES -

When we are in that space and game - we compete with the larger players - the first few years we were not considered - over the last year - we win a lot of them

but most people looking to spend 1200 - 2000 a month on a dedicated pipe have a real business model and looking for a custom solution

It's just my personal opinion that a flat Mbps commitment is better than a 100Mbps available pipe with potential overages billed based on actual transfer..... I would rather know that I can sustain 20Mbps without having to worry about how much data I am actually transferring. Of course with the 95th percentile you could incur overages, but a flat commitment always seems to work the best over time.

I think it mostly is marketing to advertise unmetered for a VPS and yes it could help closing the deal if you position peace of mind with unmetered solutions. No monitoring, no surprise. We do unmetered and most customers rarely use the full potential of the unmetered

I do not understand why many companies offer a 100Mbps "unmetered" connection and then nickle and dime with a monthly transfer limit? I prefer to offer a flat transfer rate and move on with business.

Quick answer - yes, there is a demand for this. Most of our deals are on the 95th percentile. Each server has a 100Mbps uplink port. Obliviously, the more bandwidth you commit to, the lower the price of the bandwidth.

I find the hosts that offer unmetered don't stay too long (as they are using it to get quick clients), and if they do provide the service it is quite poor.

Unmetered has it's place but there aren't many people that can deliver.

You really have to pay a lot more (more than the hardware) for a really good quality dedicated connection.

also for the math -- 1 mb/Sec over a month = 220GB data transfer (more or less) at95th percentile billing

so when you see like 1Tb of traffic it usually works out to about 5Mb/Sec per month

for those interesting in crunching rough numbers back and forth.

most co location price in mb/sec and then shared and managed hosting in GB transfers

If this is your marketing scheme is to attract potential clients then go for it, just because you are advertising unmetered 1Mbps does not mean its the only thing you sell, kind of like a lost leader, I say go for it.

I personally avoid new hosts that offer unmetered plans as I've read so many bad things about similar ones that vanished after a few months as they couldn't really offer what they were claiming. I don't seem to be alone on this either based on what I've seen on other forums as well but at the same time, it can also attract customers so it works both ways. If you're looking for unmetered for your own personal use, be sure to find some reviews before spending some money but if you plan to sell it to others, just make sure that you'll be able to give them what they paid for.

I think its just that people like to see unmetered rather than x amount. It looks like they are getting more when really they probably are not.
