There are many options - cPanel, Plesk, DirecAdmin, etc. There are also a number of free, but in matured hosting automation software. Why did you friend get a VPs without control panel if he or she can not handle it.

I would be careful putting a control panel on the server after it has already been setup and running sites. Its usally a good idea to find a control panel or a way of managing the server ahead of time as some of the control panel auto install scripts can screw up pre-configured setups.

You could also get DirectAdmin and install it yourself on your VPS, however, you need to make sure the VPS has the requirements needed for it to function proplery.

Yes, He can do this. All he has to do is make sure he has enought RAM to install and run the software. Is the VPS unmanaged or Managed?

I'd assume it's unmanaged or he could probably ask his provider to install a control panel for him

It was not a good buy (Does not matter whatever less the charges were). Even though he can add the panel later, the problem starts to configure things correctly.
