Looking to get a dedicated server.
It seems servers that you manage are cheaper than servers that the company manages for you.

question.

how do you manager a dedicated server from your computer?

Via Telnet or SSH.

I don't know much about server management either, which is why I won't be managing a server anytime soon. I recommend you let a professional do a professional's job.

Well Note that your Managed Company provider will not have console access like your server provider if there is ever an issue, Personally I would go with a Managed Dedicated Server better quality, better response and faster fixes. You may more and you demand your Managed Service

Yes, that's correct. With server management, company takes responsibility of all the technical things related to your server including patch installing, server monitoring, security, backups and restores. With a managed server you can concentrate on sales, while your server company will handle technical issues related to server(s).

For Linux: SSH (via PuTTY)
For Windows: Remote Desktop

Thankyou.

Managing your own server with SSH / Telnet can be very tricky to new server admins. I suggest you purchase a control panel (cPanel, Plesk, Direct Admin) or using a free solution like Webmin.

By using a GUI (Graphical User Interface) you will save a lot of time and frustration. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Patrick, please set up a signature in your User CP (http://www.hostingdiscussion.com/usercp.php?) and not add it manually to posts. Thank you.

Having a control panel makes life easier when it comes to managing a server. You'll still need to remotely access the server to do certain functions though but a control panel would give you the option to restart services, check stats, and so forth.

jalistthehitter,
My recommendation would be to get a dedicated server from a company that offers different levels of management. Get the highest level that you can budget in. Then, try and do a few things here and there that they say they can do. For instance some updates you can do from WHM at the click of a button. Some companies might charge $10 or more a month to do these basic updates. Once you learn how to do those updates you can drop that $10/month service. But until you learn how to do them, pay them to do it.

Smell what I'm steppin' in? As you learn how to do more stuff with the server (Google is your friend), drop those services off your monthly bill and make time to do them yourself.

I think since you are a first time user, you have to look firstly at what it is that you want to offer. Consider the Control Panel you wish to go with (if you do) and what type of Operating System you would feel more comfortable with (FreeBSD, RedHat, Debian, etc...there are a lot of choices) and what you want to mainly focus on (for example for stability and security I would choose a FreeBSD server over the Linux flavors). From there it is best to purchase a book or read some tutorials online or join a community and ask questions for a few days. If you feel comfortable that you can run the system yourself then don't look for managed solutions and try to run a smooth server for a week or (if you don't want to waste the money) install a copy of the Operating System on your desktop and play around and learn. I would strongly suggest you also learn how to operate the operating system because it is sometimes as simple as a process going down in which you have to kill it and restart it (why wait for a suppot ticket when you can do something so simple within a few seconds). Plus nowadays there are many managed server solution packages that cost about $29-50/mo in which they will do adminstration for you in case you really screwed something up. Basically how I see it is this, would you let somebody run your servers without you having no idea what was done to it or would you rather get the satisfaction of fixing everything yourself and knowing what mistakes were made?

You should get a dedicated server with control panel system for easy management, many data center offer dedicated server with web control panel. Also if you are not familiar with server management, it will be better for you to engage a server admin or otherwise you should consider buying a reseller hosting with bigger space. This will be more cost effective for you as your time can be concentrate in marketing and let other run the server management.

I would recommend that you get a managed server since you don't have the experience to manage it your self, having a control panel makes it easier to create accounts etc. but it has nothing to do with actually managing the server.

I usually get a managed server from the company directly instead of getting an unmanaged server and then get an admin to manage it.

For a begginner I suggest going with Windows Server 2003 Server Standard Edition, as its alot easier to use and manage unless your running websites. Managed server companys usually help alot, but if you dont need alot of help, you can just get help from peers here and save alot of money.

1. what type of control panel do you get and with what options?
2. what type of hardware does the ISP provide and if something happens like a hard drive failure how fast do they replace it?
3. What is their support turnaround time, and what type of support do they give?

check out sparkservers.net for instance they have some great prices and they charge in Canadian Funds starting at $99.

Thanks

Alyssa, this is your second post, and second time you advertise sparkservers.net. What is your relationship with the company?

Owner? Spammer? Shill?
Call the relationship whatever you like Art but sparkservers has used this pathetic shill tactic before. I wonder if they actually have any real customers who can finally give an honest review.

You may want to compare this persons IP with another one post wonder on this forum named Piper.
