Sup guys and gals. I need a little advice from you guys.

I was in the game server business a while back and it didnt work out too good. I lost alot of $$ and alot of time and hard work but it didnt go anywhere.

Now my dilema is I have a Sun V40Z (Quad Opteron / 8gb ram / SCSI raid .. ect) sitting in my garage doing absolutely nothing but collecting dust.

I hate seeing stuff sit around like that and I definately dont want to sell it for 1/4 of whats its worth on Ebay.

What would you guys suggest I do to make some $$ off it while its sitting there?
I have been thinking of renting out as a dedicated to someone who needs that much of a monster, but I cant seem to find anyone like that. Another option is for me to try to get into the "shared" hosting business as I am sure that machine can handle quite a few $3.99 / month customers. Problem with that is I am still sore from my game server venture.

Or maybe I should try to seek our some reseller who are ready to move to a dedicated server and do their own thing. But I would assume most reseller will not yet need the caliber of server that I am offering.

What do you guys do in my shoes?

Any option I might have missed on?

I would maybe go into the reseller and hosting business, honestly. Although it is a big industry, if you have a good site, good support and good advertising, you will do well most of the time.

Get some co-location space in a DC, pop the machine in, it'll only set you back £30-40 per month if you pull the right strings, and get into the shared business. A server of that spec will definitely support a few hundred small hosting clients.

Or you could provide it as remote backup space? Or get into gaming again... there's loads of things you could do!

You could also buy some of that green felt and glue it to the bottom, to make a nice paperweight or desk ornament.

Joking aside, there really are many options for you, some of them will take a little money, but could stand to make you a lot of money as well.

I would get some colocation space and rent it out to a hosting company. I could use a beast like that for my free hosting site.

There is more to hosting then just putting a unused server online. If your gaming business put ya that far back in debt, sell the server and regain some of the $$

Thanks for all your suggestions.

What ended up happening is I leased it out to a server company that I had colo'ed with before. They are paying $400 a month + 2mb bandwidth that I can put my own machine on and play with. $400 is a real good deal for them for a machine of that caliber I must say, but its all good, they make some money, I make some money, customer get a good machine. We all benefits.

Now to think of what to do with my 2mb. =)

That would probobly be the best idea, you could make some good money off of that, and it wouldnt be as hard as it seems. You can do that or just join with a hosting company that needs some more customers and collect a large percent of the profit of customers hosted on your machine or customers recruited by you and leave the support to the company...
