You could do free hosting on them, but as they're generally more expensive it means you don't make as much revenue from adverts. By using linux you save money so keep more profits.

Same with me, all of our servers are Linux, but I use Windows at home, however I hear windows has better performance for gaming servers than linux supposedly.

It depends on the game really. I've found that games based on the q3a engine perform better on linux but the source games and bf2 run better on windows.

yeah that is all true, while linux is just a bit more scure, i personally think that the the ease of use of windows is lot better.. plus lets face it.. a lot more people use the windows platform than the linux platform and that once again brings us back to the point of familiarity of the environment

Linux is free for desktop or home use. Linux is freely available through open source under Gnu license. So basically Linux is cost effective than windows, its much more secure and has more stability than windows. In hosting business the market share of linux is high compared to windows because of these features. Windows is expensive and is good for personal or home use.

Ah to be free of MS....but then what would all of the home users do without their Windows?

As basic as it may seem to us, most people have no desire to get into Linux to learn it etc. I guess we can all thank Bill for making things overly simple in an overly complicated way...

I'm not fond of Microsoft - infact I want to buy a Mac. However, without this PC I don't know what I'd do. So many sites are built with Windows in mind, and same with programs, and video games. It's sad - but the world needs Windows.

That's true, but I will always be a Mac person in my heart. I remember when I had a little SE/30 (30 was the MBs of the hard drive - HUGE back then :-) ) and it would do anything I wanted. Since you said earlier you aren't old enough to get lottery tickets, I doubt you remember those days - LOL!

Yep - I'm 14 so I don't remember such days, though I almost got a Mac Classic for $15 at a local thrift store

All of our servers are Windows 2003 SP1, we have found it to be every bit as stable and secure as any *nix based OS. Don't believe the hype...
