What is your opinion on hosts that oversell?
Would you use a host if you knew they oversell?
Do you think its acceptable?

I would go with a host that oversells a little. As long as it doesnt effect my service I would be OK with it.
What I dont agree with is hosts that oversell too much and their clients end up having a poorer service than expected because of it.
I wouldnt oversell any plans myself though, just incase people did use what they have been given.

I think some hosts do over sell yes. They make packages and I bet the server cant even hold that ammount. I never overload the server with what it does not have.

I have a couple of concerns regarding overselling. Most host oversell within reason so that performance and service are not affected. But I am seeing more and more new host offering 10GB+ full under $5.00 and packing the servers to full. Everytime one of those host goes down or out of business it leaves thier customers with a bad experience with the hosting industry.

The other concern is how many host are offering large reseller accounts with overselling allowed at cheap pricing. So now you have more than one level involved in overselling space, resources, and bandwidth.

I don't see why people insist on buying more then they need.

Yes its always good to look at the top hosts such as oneandone to see what they offer. I think thats a good idea, as they are popular - and online after many years.

i dont think one and one are the best hosts t obe looking up to
They have a lot of bad reviews from customers and i would say money has changed hands for most of the awards they have won.

Their servers cost far too much in my opinion but it may be because its UK bandwidth which costs a lot more than bandwidth in the US.

I just had 2 customers move to my hosting service from www.Globat.com....first 2 customers...yay

Anyways when I asked them aboutt heir move they mentioned that Globat hosted 1800 sites on a server and I was shocked when I heard this because this wasn't overselling...it was like megaselling and also their network was down and so on so forth.

I find this interesting.

I know a user that hsots with Globat and has been with them for a few months now.
he thinks they are great but he is quite advanced so doesnt require support from them.
The site has never really taken long for me to load but I have never seen any stats for it.
Did Globat tell him they are hosting 1800 sites to a server?
That is far too much if they are....

Wow.. I don't even think I would want to try to push half that many accounts on a single box.. quite a load.

I think a lot of the free hosts like netfirms, geocities etc. put around that amount of sites on a server.
I wouldnt go with a host if I knew they had so many sites to a server.
i guess it also depends on if they are causing a high server load or using much bandwidth etc. ie. if they are effecting the other sites on the server.

Yeah.. even if they were little sites I still wouldn't want to risk that many on one box.. not worth it to me.
