Most of us have tried out quite a few different hosts, with results that may differ quite a bit from each other.

Do you think there was ever one particularly bad incident that stands out for you, to the point that you went on a quest to seek that hosts downfall?

I personally have never had an experience quite that bad, but some of my friends have.

Well it was with free web hosts and that's why I have decided to move from that and switch to the paid web hosting.

These types of problems happen with the "fly by night" hosts that don't stick around for any longer than a month. Most credible hosts will handle all issues the customers report accordingly.

I do have to say though, there are some hosts that are overlooked simply because of the fact of these "fly by night" companies.

I've always been into shared hosting, and generally understood the issues that came with it. Lately I've been bit by the VPS bug (need root access to run some calc. software) and things have been great, except for my first sign-up experience.

I don't want to name the host, but coming from shared hosting I was used to the low prices and didn't really realize you get what you pay for. I ended up with a $20/m server that allegedly came with 512 mb of memory and 500 gb of bandwidth. Made sense to me. Boy was I wrong! Every other day my processes would crash and the calc. software I needed to install wouldn't even start up (it's java based). I said OK no big deal let's keep trying. A week later my server was magically "deleted" and there were no "backups". I ended up running out of there quick, didn't even bother asking for a refund. Luckily I didn't transfer anything important onto the server yet.

So in 6 years of dealing with hosting and websites, I have to say that was my worst expereince.

I ended up with a managed package from zone.net. It has less resources and bandwidth than the other VPS at a higher cost, but the service I get is top-notch and my java app actually RUNS on this VPS!

also i have had a problem with a shoutcast server from the unamed company where i would transmit through my online radio station and would recieve information with my broadcasting softs saying that i had over 10,000 listeners

i e-mailed them and they told me this was correct, i was very confused at the time

i then told some friends to connect and they said they heard nothing

i decided to try a free music host thingy that i could stream through and my friends heard the transmission using the link i gave them

was a bit dissapointed that a free server offered a better service than one i paid for

i am now hosting my radio station with dream-host

which is a uk based hosting company with alot to offer in my opinion

very helpful and quick

i also use them for quiet a few of my websites and i havent had any problems yet except for 8 minutes unscheduled downtime last week

Is there any review site featuring the worst hosts?

had a poorr experience with AIT few years back. had a dedi and the sites were down for few days due to a DNS issue which they controlled.

The worst I had was with a fansite I ran (not for profit) that would take up to three minutes per page load. This was just four months ago so nothing to do with being on a 14.4 baud modem or anything like that-but 3 minutes per page on broadband!

Then the site started going down at least daily and the customer service individuals had no idea why, or even that it was. They said all was well and that speeds were fine. With the total denial of a problem, we decided enough was enough and left the cheap hosts behind.

Oh, I just remembered something from years ago!

There was this small web-hosting company that I was with for a short while some years back. They took down my website, without offering me the chance to purchase additional bandwidth.

They also gave me no warning in advance. Needless to say, that company didn't end up lasting very long.

We transfered our site from an earlier hosting company. They weren't too happy that we had decided to move the site. We transfered the web sites files via ftp but no one remembered that there was a mysql database running and that should be transfered as well. After the transfer to the new site, we noticed that the mysql database was not running. This is when we remembered that we didn't have the mysql database. So we had to approach the earlier host and request them to allow us export the mysql database. It wasn't easy as the access had already been disabled. Eventually, we were given access to the cpanel and we got in and managed to backup the mysql database and import it at the new host. It was only after the database was running well at the new host that we were able to sigh with relief.
