There is no definitive host nor answer to the most cost effective and reliable unless you know exactly what you expect from a host, both package, support and any value added items/services.

That said there are a good selection of reliable and low cost hosts in the marketplace section of this forum.

There is no universal most reliable and cost effective host - the best host would be the one that best matches your specific requirements. As Charlie pointed out, there are plenty of great providers in the marketplace forum here.

It's more a matter of opinion than of fact. You can try out each of the ones, send some test support questions, simple stuff. Ultimately, you just have to try one and hope everything is going well.

For example, our service is very well liked by many but for a small amount of those people, they do not like us and eventually move to another provider or just deal with us but it really depends on your opinion, like fortressDewey mentioned, just try one out and hope all goes well.

Make a short list of the hosting providers you like, then look for comments in the other threads here in Hosting Discussion or in any forum. Look also for reliable reviews. With the vast number of hosting providers today, we can't say the best among them, but most of them offer satisfying service. Consider also the price.

Could you give a list of requirements that you have for your host. That would help us point you in the right direction. There are a lot of hosts out there, just decide what you want and look around. Look up reviews and try contacting them with any questions.

there is no real answer to this, many companys offer very similar spec's on their hosting at very similar prices, you may find slight variations but not a great deal. companys who maybe offer something extra or different could be something to look at. this is no direct promotion to us but we offer a carbon neutral service, others offer top site designs or pre done templates!!

My primary piece of advice is to avoid any of the "Top 10 Web Hosts" type of lists and to even avoid the "Suggested Hosts" on sites such as Wordpress.org as they're all affiliate driven and to be honest they don't care a bit about the actual quality of service and support.

If you find a review, do your best to see if you can verify it (i.e. see if they list a domain that was actually hosted at said provider).

There are a ton of great hosts, and there are a ton of not so good hosts. It really depends on your personal needs. Do you need a ton of space for a little money, you can save money by going with someone who might offer a great deal, but deliver subpar support. Or do you need more support? Keep researching forums and what not, you will find your answers! Good luck!
