Hi,

Before opening this one I have search the forums and saw that some providers said a very good word about MaxMind. We are using it and are quite happy with it at the moment.

However I want to ask you a question about phone verification. Did you have cases like this one - someone to submit fraudulent order and to use any kind of their own number (voip or prepaid phone number from the same local area where is the billing address of the stolen credit card) and to pass the phone verification procedure?

This should be 1% of the all fraud or less, but I'm curious did you got yourself into this?

No we didn't, but I'm trying to carefully examine all the scenarios... you know when you activate phone verification you might thing you are overprotected. However it is not that hard for any any scammer to fine a local phone number and to use it to get a code. Please note that I do not put on discussion the reliability of Maxmind and other phone verification solutions. From what I've seen they provide quite sophisticated tools which measure fraud score.

The possibility is very less. But another set of metric can be put to monitor/stop fraud:
1. phone type. mobile or landline
2. if landline, if ip -> city, phone -> city, address -> city matches

It's happened once. The fraudulent order will fill in their valid phone number, and will just give you what you want to hear over the phone. Honestly in my opinion, phone verification isn't a very good form of verification because they can just tell you whatever you want to hear and you still have no real proof.

1% might take this scenario , and I do applaud you for your determination in catching all types of fraud, but it's inevitable that one might pass under the radar, don't beat yourself up if something like this happens. Fraud is evolving everyday and people are getting smarter and smarter in cheating the system!

I've seen it but the order was obvious fraud so it didn't pass our manual checks

Our phone verification system weeds out pretty much all of the fraudulent orders that we receive - I couldn't be more happy with it

You are right in a way, But its just the chance that the scammer lets say or the person that is ordering is pretty dumb to find out how to pass the plugin.

But wouldn't you think, What if the person dosn't have a phone? What is he or she suppose to do, If i was that person I wouldn't sign up for that provider.

It's always best to go through these things even after passing the tests.

I think most fraud orders will be put off with the whole "have to give a phone number" thing.

I can see that being relatively easy. I am in the UK now but lived in the US for a long time. To deal with some US based clients I recently purchased a US phone number. It routes through VOIP and is the area code of the city I used to live in.

So even thousands of miles away I could fake it.

I have thought about getting maxmind but honestly I have never had a problem with fraud... I know I say that now but I guess if it ever happens I'll deal with it, and then get max mind.
