What exactly do you like reading about the web hosting provider on the About Us page? What information do you hunt for as a customer? Do you even read the About us page of a provider before signing up for their services? Do you like reading a detailed About us page, or simple with minimal details?

On an About Us page, you should have exactly that - About Us. For us, we use a number of different things from staff profiles (and pictures) so that our clients can be familiar with a face for those that they talk to. A face and a name goes a long way. We usually put a company overview on how we started, what we're doing now and what's in the future. A vision statement for the company is always appreciated too.
When I do business with people, I always look for the extra information, some other connection that I might have with them. Just like when I meet people in person (or over the phone) there's a personal relationship struck up in finding out about them, their business, their family, where they work (and play) and where they live. It allows you to come back weeks or months later and ask how was their son's college graduation, happy aniversary, happy birthday or I'm sorry to hear about the death in your family.
This is just normal sales information that you would garnish through a regular conversation with people. Sharing a little of your personal life with a customer also allows them to feel connected to you in some way.
It's the same reason here on the message boards we see "happy birthday" and things of that nature. If you can bring just a little of that personability to your About Us page, it allows a potential client to make an emotional connection - and then it's just a matter of selling your services.
I'll be honest, I don't remember all of our customers when I talk to them, but I'd say I know "about" 70% of our clients and have talked to each of them at least once. They all get a postcard each year too, and it's always hand written too.
I just hired a logo designer the other day, and just like I went through his portfolio, I also went through his about page and some of his blog so I could get a better feel for how this guy is both in life and in business. We were able to connect on a few different levels, and it has made for a great working relationship!

Ali, that is actually a great question.
When I visit an About Us page, there are 3 key things that I want to see:
1. Age of the company. I want to know the year the company started.
2. Management profiles. If I can actually see who is behind the firm, it makes me feel more at ease. And I don't mean just a name - I want to know a little bio about who the people are and what their background is - educational and professional, prior to working in this company.
3. Why I should pick the company. Without all that technical "business plan language", be REAL and do not exaggerate.

If it is a new company, there shall be information which allows any prospective customers to understand who's behind the web host and how does it do business.

On a lot of About Us pages, you'll probably also see a Career section - are they hiring? What type of employee are they looking for? Conor and Artashes brought up some great points, as well as HostColor. About Us pages definitely lend credibility to your business.

I think the about page for a web hosting doesn't have to be much detailed but be sure to included the neccesary information such as vision statement, management profiles, reasons for choosing our service, etc.

The "about us" page is not about who you are, but about who you want to be. So just copy the about us page of a company you aspire to become like. Some time, it might be true.

I agree. In fact I have to work on my about page. I don't like to pile it on with information I like to keep it pretty simple but what it is right now is pretty poor
Imo, you don't need to put to much information on it but some key points.
