My friend is willing to give me a 1 TB server hooked up with a server program loaded on it and is ready for use right away.

The thing is I have a few questions...

Will I be able to limit the amount of space per client?

What is the running cost of 1 server?

How do you advertise your space with so many competitors out there?

How do I get domains for my clients?

Should I go with this resale package instead? Would it be easier?
50 GB Disk Space
500 GB Bandwidth
Unlimited Domains
Site Builder
More
$24.95 per month

I may post more questions as they come.

Hi hunterup,

Welcome to HostingDiscussion.

Most reseller packages include tools that allow you to allocate server resources, which makes going for pre-packaged professional reseller hosting an easy and headache free choice when you are starting up.

Probably the cheapest dedicated server on the market is roughly $100/month, but it would not be able to handle demanding applications running on it well.

Domain names can be offered through a reseller account of most leading domain registrars. In fact, your client management software will most likely allow you to integrate the process into the checkout steps.

Competition is what makes this business difficult, but rewarding if you know how to stand out. Most companies choose to utilize a variety of marketing: from traditional advertising, to search engine marketing and sales through third party affiliates. However, most beginners succeed on a local market level, going after local small businesses.

My suggestion is to go with a reputable reseller provider that will be able to support your business growth as it continues.

How are other webhosters able to make Domain names on the spot when their customers order it?

So you think I should go with a reseller package instead of my own server?

If you're not sure how to do this then i'd recommend you to go with a reseller as there's a big chance you won't secure the server well. Also for domains people resell them from enom or resellerclub. I'd honestly say go for the reseller.

Good luck!

Agreed - I definitely think that you are best off starting on a reseller plan. I'd preferably choose a reseller host that is known for friendly and reliable support that can help you along the way

I agree with your point, but you'd be surprised how low prices can go. I know I was.
serverpronto.com (who seems to start at $32) even had a promotion for $5 servers. Scary.

They might work OK for hosting a couple of sites though.

I'd highly advise against using serverpronto. A quick google search will lead you to MANY negative reviews. We had a poor experience with them a few years ago as well

I agree with XeHSean, since you are new to the business, its advisable to go for a Web Host that provides you a strong & reliable support, you never know what queries your clients can come up with.

So im guessing your new to the web hosting industry and you are looking to start up and offer web hosting and be your own boss? i'd suggest you sign up with a small company that has and offers everything in a heap low affordable price and they would be glad on helping you and teaching you All about the industry. A company like GeekStorage would do you best i say that because for a nice price you get decent features like, a billing script a reseller domain account, documents and along with great suppirt and up time

Reseller is good, but I would look into VPS depending on what your looking for and budget.

He specified both in his original post - he is definitely better off with a reseller plan

Is anyone actually reading the posts?
He specified a reseller package in his original post compared to a free server that a friend is offering.

Any reasonable person would recommend the free option.
The only question is whether or not this person is capable of running a server.

If not then there is no reason to believe he is even capable of running a vps or a reseller account.

No matter how you slice it there should be some fundamental knowledge of servers and hosting software before ever getting into a reseller situation.
