what i was getting at is no matter how big a company is that if complaints are made to the correct people then a company can be closed down

A complaint does not close a Company, violation of trading standards and fraud, treating customers like crap.
You have to break laws to be closed down forcefully, besides, hostgator probably have a huge legal team that would defend most.
Your ideas are hugely flawed.

their again i never said what sort of complaint. if several fraud complaints are lodged then a company can be closed down, regardless if they have a legal team behind them if fraud is committed then it closure.
this is why a lot of hosting companies close down before being investgated for taking money and not provide services (fraud)

Fraud is a pretty serious offense. It would have to be a company policy of some sort if it is going to lead to the whole company being closed. Most times, what is touted as "fraud" is nothing more than error or a misunderstanding.
While competitors may have a field day when hearing such news, the agency/judge deciding and enforcing this would certainly take into account the situation of the 1000 or so employees that this company has. I don't think anyone would push the "close" button easily when so many people's lives can be affected. That's not even taking into account the tens of thousands of customers.

that is not true, look at how many large companies have gone into receivership/liquidated that have 1000s of staff and thousands of customers. this is life it happens no matter how largea company.
Fraud can have a company closed down.

Unlimited almost always has some stipulation somewhere to cover the problems that arise when the user discovers that it really is not unlimited.
Unlimited sends up the red flag for me. Now, if only the typical hosting client would discover the same.
As for Hosting Gator, I agree that as long as they have the ad. budget they are going to continue to be a big force within the industry.

they actually know that you aint gonna use even 5% of that. normal business owners or even a small online retail store is not gonna use much. hardly 5 databases, and initially the traffic isnt gonna be much, Moreover, as other people here rightly said, its a marketing tag line. have a look at godaddy themselves, they are the world's biggest hosting company, and even they advertise the "unlimited" stuff.

Unlimited does not exist at all, regarding hosting.
There is unmetered, which mean they (the host) don't care what you use, as long as you stick to rules. But I won't trust it. Example in free hosting: All these *serve sites, like koolserve, they all offer unlimited but delete your account for "High CPU Usage"

any host that offer umlimited space/bandwidth wil have in place a strict fair use policy which the slightest breach of this and they will terminate your account.
any host will warn any account holder if they created a High CPU usage, but with a paid host it would be a message and both the account holder and host would work to find what script is causing this.
you have unmetered slightly wrong. this is where you will be given a base of say 20GB space and 30GB bandwidth, this is not metered, so when infact you approach this limited the host will get a warning email from the server and all the host will do is increase these resources without any further charge to the account holder.

I hate when i see people advertising unlimited plans because its not fair to people who dont really know that much about webhosting. Obviously there needs to be a limit because after awhile, things are going to get messed up with unlimited.

nothing is unlimited, but all what happening is hiding the real max space you can see and over sell the same space.
