Many people which go to the hosting market being actually out of it, having no experience in interaction with hosts often face the problem of finding those which are truly reliable and even may get scammed.

We shall try to point out some signs of reliable companies to make the choice more grounded.

First, it shall not be supposed the popular companies are reliable by default. Popularity is gained by brand promotion, advertising campaigns, which are not connected with real service quality, which is often suffers especially when it comes to shared hosting accounts located at overcrowded servers of financially large companies. Too many people at limited resources.

Another point of misunderstanding is price. Costs of service alone tell nothing of quality, and if the price is above average the quality is not necessary good, while too low price, "1 dollar for unlimited space" is simply too good to be true. The price should be reasonable - preserving a stable balance of the specifications, features and tools offered for the certain cost.

Among the signs of reliability we may point out the company's market experience, which is usually standing in direct ratio with reliability. For example, the host which has been operating for ten years should be (though not necessary is) reliable, otherwise it would not stand for so long. The companies would certainly tell they are the best and the most longstanding at their website titles, but there are many online tools, such as http://www.domaintools.com website, allowing to see the whois data of any domain, and verify the term it iss used by the certain registrant for.

Reliable companies usually have good reviews at review sites, which are available in Search Engines listings. It is also recommended to query "webhosting sucks" to know if there are any bad reviews and how many of the experiences are bad.

Resellers, which just rent an account with reseller tools are more dependent, are potentially less reliable than hosts which provide service using own equipment, so pay attention to the ownership of the servers you are going to use for hosting. Own DataCenter is not very frequent, but its presence is a very good sign for a host. While using a reseller, make sure their parent provider is enough reliable, but making a research about their service.

Finally, the site design and usability can also tell a lot of the site owner, which being well-standing host would make everything to have these parameters at the highest level. When you see an amateurish design and experience the lack of usability, you would most likely experience the amateurish service and the lack of quality at this hosting. The good point is presence of private SSL certifcate.

So these are general signs able to be pointed after the brief analysis of the hosting experience. But, note, these are not the unbreakable laws of the hosting world, but just indirect notices which cannot be absolutely legitimate for every host and service, as the exclusions are everywhere. This information should help you setting a correct direction of the research, being something like a sieve with large mesh, able to filter the complete and maybe obvious junk from the options salad, people face entering the hosting world as a client.

For a reliable provider you need to get information about that provider, check remarks in the market and then go for it.

And what if the information you could be able to find is not true? I saw hosts which were "the number ones" at some directories' rating, but their quality has not been even the number five. While their design, domain name and the time they have been working for online told much more than the promo articles and hidden advertising.

Sign up a web hosting plan on quarterly base billing cycle and analyze web host's performance and trustworthiness by yourself. I think this is the right way for those who are looking for reliable web hosting services.

How true - while many today are computer literate, many are still 'hosting' illiterate.' It's forums like these that help educate those searching for reliable hosting providers.

Computer literate, yet hosting illiterate, nice point there steve! In fact, even people who graduated computer courses have trouble with hosting!

How much is in these words) They can even be used instead of the whole first sentence of an article.

Actually I remember the time when I was hosting illiterate being though computer literate. Now it is finally over, I believe.

Well, I couldn't disagree this way is the most accurate, but what if I have no time for analyzing having desperate need to come out online with my, say, e-store, as soon as possible because if I wouldn't the competitors will and making wrong choice will cost me much more than just money, so it is reasonable to perform research before sign up.

Thanks for the points.

Well, I am not denying the importance of analyzing various factors, but this is also a fact that finding genuine reviews of existing customer is a difficult task, as there are lot of self promoters and affiliates always active on community forums, web hosting reviews and so forth. So I think comparison should be done among companies who are providing web hosting service since the long time.

Honestly, in the end, it all comes down to the knowledge the person searching for web hosting has.. A well informed and experienced buyer will most likely choose a reliable provider after doing some research, as where the newbie, compulsive buyer will probably end up with someone like GoDaddy or BlueHost (not saying these are bad providers, but many people wouldn't call them "reliable").

That is exactly why forums like this one are so important to the web hosting industry. The average user probably thinks Google's site is hosted on an UNLIMITED hosting account and are ready to start their own billion dollar website.

Reviews are generally unreliable as are top sitres. Many users are promised free credits if they givde reviews on popular sites. I find the best way to find a good host is to submit a sales ticket, ask questions, therefore you can see the response time and professionalism of the responses.

Reliable provider is someone who provides a 24X7 Quality Technical support along with fast connectivity and good server uptime. You can check the 24x7 support by calling them in non-business hours or Weekends. With this you will be able to get an idea about their support. You can visit their internal forums or even some external forums where you will find reviews about their hosting services. So you can easily make out that the hosting provider is reliable or not.

I believe that commonly people who looks for reliable host don't read anything about this host, their choice mostly based on prices, website look and customers testimonials

What I always try to look for is if they have a phone number on their website, or if their about us page is original (and human)

That was the point of an article - to let people who are 'hosting illiterate' know the basic signs of the reliable host.

I agree with anyone who says that a reliable hosting provider must have a history on the market. However we have all seen a new "super" providers created from well-known professionals in our industry who team up to create a bigger and better hosting company.
