been a hosting proovider can be consedered a full time job. it requires time and lots of attention as the provider need to monitor, the servers often.
Consedering the time spent on management of servers, i have concluded that for the providers it can be a full time job. what's your thoughts on it?

Web hosting *IS* a full time job and *SHOULD* be treated as such. Too many people setup a small shop and do things half way. I don't mind people starting out and growing with the intention to maintain a full time job but I think in todays market there's just a lot of competition. The only way a new host would survive these days is to be a Niche Host, and even then your clients are paying you for Full Time services, so you should be providing that too.

It is not a single person business to run a professional hosting company. It requires lot of human resource, physical resource and montery into it. However, my suggestion would to start with any reliable reseller hosting package and attract customers as much as possible. When you have enough customers and ready to go for a big deal just start hosting business.

Yes, that's why you see almost every hosting company advertised to be 24 x 7 support.

Include us in that list. Of course, being a successful web hosting provider is a full time job.

Of course, it is a full time job. In fact it requires more than normal job because you have to provide 24/7 services and servers need to be monitored all the time.

There are many people that run their hosting provider as a full-time job and make quite good money from it

So, make sure you find a quality hosting company who offer 24x7 support seriously.

Just be careful if you don't pay your taxes, it will surely catch up with you, you must treat your career as you would any career, you are "Self-Employing" yourself so do make sure to investigate on what it takes to run a business and follow by your state/countries policies towards managing your business.

I've seen both sides of the spectrum. It doesn't take much research to find out how much manpower is behind a network infrastructure. There are hosts that have only a few customers that can get away with working part time and there are hosts that truly are a fully managed, round the clock, hosting company. It's the small one man shops that pose as hosting giants that get into trouble in the long run.

All other things equal, it comes down to the work load and how large their operation is. Because so much of our business can be outsourced (for lack of a better word) such as support, server and data center maintenance, etc. it isn't difficult for someone to run a business with a half a dozen decent sized customers and do well part time. This approach isn't exactly inferior to a complete in-house fully managed IT solution. It's strictly a matter of customer satisfaction and honesty between you and your customers.

So is Hosting a full time job every time? I guess the answer is "It depends..."

Obviously it requires 24x7 attention, but obviously 1 person can't do that on their own. There's many ways to get their though, use outsourced support, etc. But the main thing is, first work out your business plan, then start the business.

I would say not to out sourced support for hosting business. In house team can be far more effective than relying on others.

24/7 can mean 24/7 support or 24/7 on-site support., which very different concept and something that is often misunderstood.
