They're ok if budget is low. They do have too many limits though. And they limit data transfer speed, etc so page load speeds are slow.

Might aswell just pay around £3/month for better performance/less downtime.

My preference is to avoid free hosting, even if they appear stable across the board.

free hosting is the basic, if you want to create online shop or other website. Best using payment web hosting

I would avoid it, if I were you. Back in 2006, I got free hosting from a guy who was getting reseller from resellerscene. I had a blog and it was hacked, Mod security out of date; I lost a years worth of work. I was ticked.

I now have reseller through HostMist and I am quite happy. I also got hosting through a friend who had hosting via Site5.com. That was horrible!

also a host offering free hosting will most likely also be offering paid hosting, and if using the same server here is a scenario. his server is almost full with free hosting accounts and paid hosting accounts where he only has 3 GB space left on the server, so one day he gets a prospective paying client who needs 8GB of space and you on your free plan is using 5GB of space. so guess what will most likely happen as you are not paying, your site will be terminated to make way for the paid client and as you are not paying the host will not care that you have lost your site, no matter how much work you have put in

Hmmm, free hosts are always a danger, well they are giving you something for free without earning something and they may get bankrrupted and get out of business and you will have problems.

So it is better a paid host,

You cna go with free hosting if its non-serious project.

If it is serious project then it is 100 time better go with paid host.

a host offering free hosting will almost 100% have his server abused and oversubscribed. so if ther server gets abused then the IPs can become blacklisted and then the DC could have that server and IPs shut down and then where will you be.

i ran a business on a VPS offering free and reduced hosting for registered charities and community groups, where proof of status was required befoire they were granted this, but this was abused by charity staff who set up using the charities name/number, so i took it down. i never placed ads on any free sites, but i did request a link back to our main site. so the hosting was free, subsidised by my other servers

is way too hard to determine if a free hosting business could make money, meaning its very unstable

I have gone out of my way to avoid free web hosting companies. There is a reason that they are free, usually because they make money in other ways. Since I have never used one I don't know for sure, but I think they have authority to use popups on your website. If I am going to put a great deal of time and effort into making a site, I will pay the money to get the service I think I deserve.

I agree. I have had a very unpleasant experience when i went for a free web hosting provider. It was just two months ago when i heard about it and decided to check it out but was totally let down by the kind of speed and overall service i was getting. So, i discontinued with them and promised myself to never go for a free web hosting company as the don't ever prove to be of any value.

Hope you find this useful.

Thanks

on my personal website, i use free host for experiment and it run for one year. after that, it has so many down-times and had different problems. i suggest you only use free hosting in your personal blogs/websites.

+ 100 to this, the main intention behind free hosting is using clients websites for free advertisements. And the worst thing is that your website can be removed anytime without prior intimation and without taking any backup. This leaves the webmaster in the deep trouble as he can not raise any question or objection because he is not paying anything for it.

This is what stated earlier if it come that the host had a paid client wanting space, well he would just take down your site to accommodate a customer that is willing to pay for the space.
