Traditional Hosting: Mainly Traditional Hosting comes in two forms: Shared hosting and Dedicated Hosting.

With shared hosting, which is more common among small and medium sized businesses, the client pays for a set amount of space (storage) on a single server, and that server's resources are shared by a number of other websites. It's a cost-efficient, low-maintenance way to host a website or application, and the hosting company is responsible for managing, maintaining, and updating the units.
You will need to adapt by purchasing additional server space to add to your storage space and processing power. But if traffic falls again, you will be paying for resources that you aren't using.

With dedicated hosting, a company pays for the complete resources of one or more servers from a service provider. The client has a set amount of dedicated bandwidth, CPU, RAM, and drive space, and the client has full control over the servers resources.

I thought that traditional hosting was different because it is backed at home, in a regular oven.

And what about VPS hosting, isn't it traditional?

Why do you think Cloud hosting isn't traditional?

I believe cloud hosting is just a marketing trick.

Very often, when people ask me about web hosting, they want to know if I know any cheap but good web host. This particularly applies to those who are just starting their web site and are not willing to sink a lot of money into it.
Read customer hosting reviews before making any final order.

I think there might be something to it but there is much confusion about what cloud hosting is. There are some companies who have the criteria that cloud hosting is when your "virtual" severs are hosted in different datacenters. Other claim it is the difference between OpenVZ servers on the one side and KVM/XEN servers on the other side. And then there are those who over plain VPS as cloud hosting without explaining why regular VPS services are VPS and their services are cloud.

Eventually I think there will be established a common terminology but that might take a while.

Yes, "Cloud" is indeed the buzz word right now, but isn't the Cloud supposed to mean the utilization of shared resources over a network? Meaning, you can run apps, store and access data, and scale and provision your computing resources "in the cloud" via the Internet.

If hosts want to spin it and use it as their current go-to marketing word, so be it, I guess. But as time goes by, I believe more and more consumers will come to understand how they can greatly benefit from the cloud's scalability and resource pooling and find hosts that are providing true cloud environments.

If I'm talking about "cloud" I always mention scalable grid hosting, but some hosts think other way
